Publishers

Zed Books

was set up by a group of activists in 1976 to address the need for the representation of international and third world socialist voices at a time when mainstream publishing did not seem to have space for this. Through the years, this commitment to publish progressive books from an international perspective has been adhered to, which has meant a continuing commitment to making books available across the developing world as well as in the UK and USA. The brand inspires a strong level of trust and loyalty.

Many of Zed's books are used on courses, but what distinguishes them among other academic publishers is that as well as being academically sound in terms of research and grounding, it is vital that this comes across in a way that appeals to a wider audience.

Open to submission of a detailed synopsis, an outline, specifications as to the targeted market, possible referees and sample chapters.

On the web

greenstory.co.uk

If you like the idea of collaborative fiction, whether that be helping to write it, helping to judge it or just reading over the gradual process of it, then greenstory.co.uk could well be for you. Green Metropolis and The Woodland Trust have started a creative writing competition where anybody can help to write a story, a chapter at a time, that encourages readers of all ages to think about how we can best look after trees and the environment.

There are three versions of the story, depending on what type of fiction you write: adults', teen or children's. Every month for ten months, contributors are asked to write a chapter that takes the story-in-progress in the direction they think it should go. Chapters are chosen through a series of monthly votes and all of the winning chapters will be published as The Green Story book at the end of the year.

Don't forget to check out the organisation's sister site, too. www.greenmetropolis.com is a great resource for getting hold of new books without costing the planet; and lightening the burden on your own straining shelves.
