TEN TOP TIPS

How to enjoy those lit fests

1. Be organised

Keep your itinerary loose, so you can sit back and enjoy events. Don’t forget: your phone charger; your (Mslexia) diary and business cards; and any books you may have for signing.

2. Keep an open mind

Go to see new authors; explore a variety of genres. Discussion panels between writers whose work you don’t normally read can be fun – and it’s always enlightening to hear about the process.

3. Make like a Girl Guide: be prepared

Take cash for books: authors appreciate the support. Try to keep a straight face when you meet writers who appear a lot older than their brochure portrait.

4. First impressions

If you’re fortunate enough to be performing, be familiar with the work of co-readers. (Saves red faces during intros and post-reading drinks).

5. Open mic

If you’re fortunate enough to be performing, be familiar with the work of co-readers. (Saves red faces during intros and post-reading drinks).

6. What to wear

Dressing up as your favourite character isn’t common, but no one will reprimand you for it. Fishnets and stilettos won’t guarantee a tumble with your preferred author (but it’s worth a try!)

7. Speak up; know when to stop

If there’s a Q&A session, ask intelligent questions – but remember, rambling should be saved for the Dales.

8. Heckling

This is an ideal opportunity to meet like-minded people. Make sure they remember you for the right reasons and watch your alcohol intake: rosy-cheeked is borderline.

9. Curb your party spirit

This is an ideal opportunity to meet like-minded people. Make sure they remember you for the right reasons and watch your alcohol intake: rosy-cheeked is borderline.

10. Thoughts and comments

While not as valuable as a monetary donation or sponsorship, constructive feedback to festival organisers and authors is always appreciated.
